Born in Ozawa Village, Kosaka-san studied Chinese poetry under Komuro Shigehiro and Nanga painting under Maruyama Soya. He then studied under the great Kodama Katei. In 1890, he moved to Tokyo and in the same year won a second-class commendation at the Naniwa Art Association Exhibition. In 1893, he won a third-class commendation at the 28th Japan Art Association Exhibition, and in 1897, he won a second-class commendation at the 32nd Japan Art Association Exhibition. In 1898, he won a second-class commendation at the 33rd Japan Art Association Exhibition, and his work was purchased by the Imperial Household Ministry. Around this time, his teacher Katei gave him the pen name “Shibata”, named after Tanomura Chikuden. He received a commendation at the Tokyo Prefecture Industrial Exposition in 1907, and won third place and 12 places at the 2nd Bunten Exhibition in 1908. He won second place at the Tokyo Prefecture Fine Arts and Crafts Exhibition in 1910, and won nine commendations at the 4th Bunten Exhibition in the same year. His work was purchased by the government at the 5th Bunten Exhibition in 1911, and he opened the Sekisui Sanbo art school in Sakuragicho, Ueno that same year. He won second place and a silver medal at the 48th Japan Art Association Exhibition in 1912, and won second place at the 6th Bunten Exhibition in the same year. He won second place again at the 7th Bunten Exhibition in 1913.* (*From Yuagariart).

His works are held in the MOMAT, Museum of the Imperial Collections, The Smithsonian, etc. etc…

Large and impressive! Beautifully remounted within the last few decades and now good to hang without worry for a hundred years or so. The honshi (main painted area) has many small “normal” small stains and damages from being over 125 years old.
